1) Eat foods that are local and in season for Fall, like nuts, seeds, pears, persimmons, pomegranate, squashes, apples, figs. For a complete list, go to www.sustainabletable.org.
2) Support elimination by adding additional fiber. You can add a fiber supplement or add 2 Tbsp ground flax seeds or Chia seeds daily to your food.
3) Drink plenty of fluids to enhance the excretion of toxins through the kidneys and stay hydrated. My rule of thumb is take your body weight, divide it in half, and drink at least that many fluid oz. for example, if you weigh 160 lbs, you would want to drink at least 80 fl oz of water/day.
4) Practice 3 rounds of Breath of Fire daily to strengthen and enhance elimination through the lungs. Check out some visuals here (hello!) and here (work your way up to this pace)
5) Practice self-massage or abhyanga to move the lymphatic system. Try using warm sesame oil or special ayurvedic oils and massage towards your heart. This will help clear out accumulated toxins in the tissues.
6) Movement. It is ideal to do at least 20 minutes of vigorous movement in the morning and then at least 20 minutes relaxing yoga practice, stretching or Chi gong in the evening.
Exercising 20ish minutes after a meal is optimal.
7) Enhance digestion with herbs and spices like cardamom, fresh ginger, cinnamon, fennel, cumin, and turmeric. Eat them in your food or make a simple tea such as:
Fennel and Ginger Tea
1 tsp fennel seeds
1 tsp minced fresh ginger
1 1/2 cup water
Place all ingredients in pan and boil together 5 minutes. Strain and drink.
