Extreme Health: Natural Remedies for Maintaining Vitality and Treating Common Ailments at Burningman

The Climate out at Black Rock City is intense, and your body can really take a toll from all of the other fun shenanigans that you might get into on the Playa. So a little health prep can go a long way.

Here is a handout I made for a talk last year chock full o' tips and strategies to help keep you in tip top form so you can have more energy and stamina, sleep better, not get sick and get back to work more easily when you return to the modern world.

I.Basics

· Hydration: carry water at all times. Use electrolytes, pinch of sea salt, Emergen-c.

· Food- eat lightly, but snack regularly. Include salty foods.

· Sunscreen. Lip Balm. Hat.

· Goggles/Sunglasses/Dust Mask

· Sleep-when you can!

· Basic Supplements: Multivitamin. EFA. Greens.

· First Aid Kit- suggestion can be found at www.burningman.com

II. Thriving vs Surviving

· Playa Foot: wear shoes! Soak in ¼ white vinegar and 3/4water. Dry thoroughly and apply coconut oil or good moisturizer before going bed or putting your shoes and socks on

· Indigestion: if you tend to have a sensitive tummy: take probiotics daily before hitting the playa, and also while you are there. Consider taking digestive enzymes if you tend to get tummy aches or indigestion. Be sure to bring some mint, chamomile or licorice tea.

· Diarrhea: use a hand sanitizer (natural one) after using the porta- potty. Bring some Charcoal caps. In a pinch, eat some burnt toast or carob.

· Constipation: take 250-500 mg of extra magnesium daily. Hydrate. Bring a gentle magnesium based laxative if you know you tend towards constipation.

· Playa Lung: from the dust, Burning stuff. Mint/Licorice Teas. Liver detox support- during and after. Cough Elixir with soothing herbs like Marshmallow and Licorice. Be sure to take a formula like this if you have asthma. Use your dust mask. Especially after the Man Burn and the Temple Burn

· Dry/Hoarse/ Sore throat: use a throat spray with propolis and soothing herbs several times/day. Natural throat lozenges. Throat coat tea.

· Colds/Flus/Infections: bring a basic all purpose immune support formula and Vitamin C

· Dry Irritated Eyes: homeopathic eye drops with Euphrasia. Wear your goggles.

· Bumps/Bruises/Sprains/Strains: homeopathic formula with Arnica in it. For topical lesions, a gel or salve with calendula and other antiseptic and anti-microbial herbs in it.

· Energy: support your energy with more than just caffeine! Consider taking Maca, Ginseng, Licorice or other adrenal support, multi vitamins, greens

Many of these products can be found in my natural pharmacy

III. Party Pax

· Daily Maintenance Pax- multi-vitamin, EPA/DHA, liver detox support, brain nutrients, magnesium

· Booze Pax: provides electrolytes, liver detox support, anti-inflammatory and blood sugar balance

· Extreme Pax- supports neurotransmitter balance, liver detox, muscle relaxation

· I recommend a Daily Maintenance Pax , um...daily

+ a booze pax if you are indulging in more than a few drinks
